Bruce Eitzen of New World Associates Landscape Architects is the founder of a recently launched heritage group called Landscape Heritage SA (LHSA).

The goals of this organisation are to:

  • develop an understanding of the natural and cultural landscapes of southern Africa;

  • promote the concept of landscape in southern Africa in its own right as a natural, cultural and/or designed phenomenon;

  • record and map the natural and cultural character of the country’s landscapes, noting regions, places, people, practices and features of landscape value and interest.

The conservation of landscape is currently fragmented amongst different legislation aimed at various aspects such as wildlife, water, forestry, agriculture, mining, tourism and town and regional planning. There is no specific legislation for the identification and conservation of landscape and it will require extensive co-ordination, as well as an entirely new mindset, to place the conservation of landscape on the right path.

LHSA is actively promoting a wide range of landscapes, from historic to indigenous, recreational, horticultural, terrestrial and coastal, on its public Facebook – Landscape History and Heritage of Southern Africa.
