STREET ART IN SALT RIVER
The medium of street art is a powerful platform for activism, according to the co-founder of Baz-Art, Alexandre Tilmans. Salt River in the Cape is the site of murals done by various artists during the International Public Arts Festival (IPAF) to reflect their commentary.
Anthea Missy, an artist who has previously participated in the IPAF, created a “save our trees” mural to raise awareness around the need to protect the environment and highlight deforestation in South Africa as part of the climate crisis. She believes that the street is a public space that belongs to everyone.
Historians have found evidence of street art dating back to the 1st century B.C.E, when the Romans wrote messages to each other on their walls.
