TOYOTA LAUNCHES PROJECT OTTER WITH OWL RESCUE CENTRE

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) in partnership with its long-standing conservation partner, Owl Rescue Centre, has launched Project Otter, a conservation initiative aimed at protecting, rehabilitating and releasing rescued otters in South Africa.

For almost two decades, the Owl Rescue Centre has successfully rescued, rehabilitated and released thousands of wild animals, making it a leading wildlife rehabilitation organisation in the country. Toyota has supported the centre’s mission to protect biodiversity and Project Otter marks the next chapter in preserving South Africa’s natural heritage.

As apex predators in freshwater ecosystems, otters play an important role in maintaining ecological balance and serve as valuable indicators of environmental health. However, threats such as habitat degradation, pollution and human-wildlife conflict place pressure on wild populations, making conservation interventions increasingly important.

With Toyota’s sponsorship of an otter acclimation dam, Project Otter represents a significant expansion of the centre’s conservation efforts. Designed to replicate natural habitat conditions, the facility provides rescued otters with an environment where they can rebuild swimming, hunting and survival skills before their eventual release back into the wild.

Toyota’s investment is helping to create long-term conservation infrastructure that will benefit South Africa’s wildlife for many years to come. Their partnership demonstrates what is possible when business and conservation work together to create lasting solutions for biodiversity protection.
