Brahman Hills: The Making of a World Class Garden is a new coffee table book that describes the transformation of a derelict roadside motel into a five-star destination and Royal Horticultural Society partner garden.
Authored by Iain Buchan, Michele Magwood and Tim Steyn, with photography by Connall Oosterbroek, the book explains how a whole team turned crisis into creation during the Covid -19 lockdown. The book documents the journey of a forgotten piece of land into one of South Africa’s most celebrated gardens.
Guided by the vision of Carol Buchan, a passionate plantswoman with a love for indigenous flora, staff at the hotel worked on the garden, carving out paths and planting trees. They cultivated a living sanctuary that now stands as a symbol of beauty and resilience.
Carol’s vision was refined by landscaper Tim Steyn, and the result is a five hectare botanical treasure of forest walks, flower beds, dams, grottoes, sculptures and bee hives.
The book is available online and in stores.
