A masterclass in contemporary botanical drawing will be held on 8 July 2026 at Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West, Cape Town. Guided by renowned botanical artist Sally Arnold, participants will explore how to plan, compose and execute a botanical artwork inspired by Vergelegen’s celebrated camellia collection. The programme is structured to help artists refine their technique, elevate their individual style and reinterpret a classical subject.
Ms Arnold has studios in both Prince Albert and Luxembourg and is highly regarded for her precise, contemporary interpretations of plant life that balance scientific accuracy with artistic expression. A fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists, she holds an M.A and Diploma in Botanical Art. Her respected teaching guides artists to develop both technical skills and a more observant connection with the natural world.
The focus will be on drawing attention to the details within the camellia blossom, buds and leaves. Traditional botanical drawing styles and rules will be respected but participants will be encouraged to push the envelope in terms of how they highlight focal aspects of their chosen subject. Another important element will be the use of colour pencil layering-up, which can achieve powerful three-dimensional shapes.
