Maritzburg College was the winner of this year’s Husqvarna Schools Forest Rehabilitation Challenge at Ferncliffe Forest, competing against three other KZN schools. The event focussed on teamwork and caring for nature, as learners dug holes to plant trees in the forest. The college won a Husqvarna pressure washer, and all the schools received prizes, certificates and vouchers to redeem at Husqvarna’s online store.
Held during Arbour Week, the challenge teaches young people to protect the environment. The other participating schools were Durban High School, Weston Agricultural College and Westville Boys High.
Held in partnership with non-profit organisation Ferncliffe Forest Wilding, the challenge tested each team’s ability to dig ten planting holes across three different stations in the threatened mist belt forest – all while working together, caring for the natural environment around them and protecting the fragile, indigenous plants in the forest.
For Husqvarna, the forest rehabilitation challenge reflects the brand’s long-term commitment to sustainability and community engagement. The initiative also highlights the vital role that trees play in protecting ecosystems and inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.
