LEGAL BOREHOLE DRILLING

In the face of extreme weather events, including drought and floods, safeguarding water is critical, and the Borehole Water Association (BWA) says the drilling of boreholes and responsible use of groundwater are an essential part of alleviating South Africa’s water crisis.
Illegally tapping into municipal water supplies puts additional pressure on already strained systems, and accessing water via properly constructed boreholes means that communities have a safe and sustainable source of water without needing to rely on illegal connections. Compliant borehole drilling ensures the protection of the country’s natural aquifers and prevention of groundwater contamination.
As the industry voice for Southern Africa, the BWA is leading education on responsible and sustainable use of groundwater. It recently developed a series of training programmes under an initiative of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), with assistance from the Institute of Groundwater Studies. Course content for borehole contractors and pump installers has been compiled, and the BWA will deliver the training, certifying those who complete the courses as members of the association.
The BWA is committed to upholding minimum standards of practice for the industry and promotes the sustainable use of South Africa’s groundwater.
