NEW FOOTBALL STADIUM IN LESOTHO
Updated: May 9
A new 1280-seater football stadium constructed primarily from sustainably sourced timber, will be built in Maseru, Lesotho. Dubbed the Stadium of Life, the project will harness timber’s renewability and carbon storage properties. It stems from a collaboration between football club Kick4Life, NPO Rise International, the Forest Stewardship Council and DNV, an international certification body.
The stadium will be Africa’s first FSC-certified timber stadium, setting new standards for sustainable construction and environmental responsibility. Project certification verifies that the forest materials used come from FSC-certified forests, recycled or controlled sources. It also ensures the responsible sourcing of timber and the promotion of environmental stewardship and community development.
The stadium is designed as a multi-purpose facility that extends beyond sport, acting as a hub for diverse activities such as climate change education, gender empowerment, academic tutoring, health testing and entrepreneurship training. It aims to foster a connection between football and nature, encouraging visitors to consider the sport’s impact on our natural environment.
Treated Eucalyptus poles will be used, forming the west and south stands, and a perimeter fence. As the construction sector seeks materials with a lighter environmental footprint, lower greenhouse gas emissions and better energy efficiency, people are looking at forest products to meet these goals.
