Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) has earned the city of Joburg three prestigious awards from World Urban Parks 2025, reaffirming its position as a leading green city in Africa. The following accolades were received:
*the Best Entity Award, honouring JCPZ for its leadership and environmental stewardship in the management of parks, open spaces and biodiversity assets. This recognition reflects the entity’s commitment to restoring urban green spaces and improving access to nature.
*the Large Urban Parks Award, presented for the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, a prime example of ecological conservation and community participation. The 680 hectare reserve offers residents a tranquil retreat and protects indigenous flora, fauna and cultural heritage.
*the Most Distinguished Individual Award, awarded to Bishop Ngobeli, green ambassador of JCPZ, for his tireless advocacy of tree planting across South Africa. He has mobilised inter-governmental and civic groups in support of urban reforestation and climate resilience.
World Urban Parks, the global authority on urban green space management, celebrates organisations that demonstrate innovation, inclusion and community impact. Joburg’s success underscores how well-managed parks and open spaces contribute to the city’s 2040 Growth and Development Strategy.
