The Waffling Whale tail above the entrance to Formosa Bay Resort in Plettenberg Bay is Africa’s largest 3D-printed structure. It stands five metres high and its unique texture mimics that of the famous waffles served at the Waffling Whale Café.
The structure is intended to become a notable landmark on one of South Africa’s busiest tourism routes. With Plettenberg Bay renowned for its incredible whale sitings, the idea is to attract travellers for photos at this roadside attraction that blends hospitality, public art and story telling.
Plettenberg Bay has a longstanding connection to marine life and ocean conservation, and the Garden Route is an iconic tourism corridor. The town is internationally recognised for its Blue Flag beaches, whale and dolphin sitings, indigenous forests, lagoons, wine farms and adventure experiences. The whale structure creates an attraction that reflects the coastal energy, celebrates marine life and complements the region’s tourism experience. The whale structure draws from the fleeting sight of a whale diving beneath the ocean’s surface during whale season.
