SCIENCE FOR IMPACT
Updated: Sep 19, 2023
The annual Oppenheimer Research Conference (ORC) discusses natural and environmental sciences, conservation and sustainable development in Africa. Its 12th event takes place in October 2023 with the theme ‘Science for Impact’; the keynote address will be given by Naledi Pandor, Minister of International Relations and Co-Operation and there will be an official welcome by Dame Jane Goodall, world-renowned conservationist. Dr Carl Jones, a Welsh conservation biologist with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, is also one of the speakers.
A further highlight at this year’s conference will be the awarding of the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant, presented annually to an African-led, environmental research programme for a period of three years. The grant is $150 000 and this year’s recipient will give a presentation to introduce his/her research project.
The ORC has become widely known for profiling excellence and empowering young researchers and environmental stewards. The conference is an excellent platform to profile the numerous research and conservation success stories achieved in the environmental and natural science fields. Broad topics include science communication, zoology, aquatics, geology, ornithology, herpetology, ecology and holistic management.
