SCANIA FOREST PLANTING
Updated: Oct 11, 2023
Scania Southern Africa is planting a forest – one tree for every customer who partners with them to drive the shift to a sustainable transport solution. The trees will be planted in areas where they have the most impact; research links trees to a reduction in crime, better school performance and improved health benefits. Every tree planted will create a healthy and sustainable community ecosystem, while ensuring that these business visionaries will always be a part of the environment they are helping Scania to protect.
South Africa’s roads carry more than 70% of all goods transported across the country and as such, it is essential to ensure that the effects of climate change are drastically reduced. Scania is taking collective ownership of its role in climate change and already its vehicles produced in 2023 emit 20% less carbon emissions than those produced in 2015.
When fossil fuels such as diesel burn, they release carbon dioxide and these gases are trapped in the atmosphere, causing temperatures to rise and leading to climate change. The transport sector is particularly exposed and vulnerable to the impacts of natural disasters. In South Africa, it is the third largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, with most vehicles running off internal combustion engines powered by fossil fuels.
